Welcome to Independent Living, Inc.
Adults who want to manage their independence at home come to us for a variety of support that ranges from in-home services like housekeeping and personal care, to medical services that include nursing care and physical therapy. Seniors also have several housing options with us in Madison, Fitchburg and Sun Prairie. We are a local, community-oriented, not-for-profit organization, and have been serving seniors and adults with disabilities for 40 years.
It's Because We Can
Independent Living, Inc. is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a bit of flair and a vague nod to tradition. A colony of 40 pink plastic flamingos, some decorated, will roost periodically at several Independent Living locations this summer!
What better way to celebrate a 40th milestone than with Madison's official bird, in a pink shade reminiscent of the traditional 40th anniversary gift: ruby. The lawn ornament has an affectionate place in Madison history. The iconic bird first appeared Sept. 4, 1979, as a college student prank when 1,008 flamingos landed on Bascom Hill at the University of Wisconsin campus. Sept. 1, 2009, Madison Common Council declared the pink plastic flamingo as the city's official bird. The anniversary flock, many adorned with decorations, landed first at ILI main offices at 2970 Chapel Valley Road, Madison.
Making a Difference
Independent Living, Inc., serves adults in many ways. Our Evening Meals on Wheels Program is one of those ways. Every day, we serve approximately 180 evening meals to seniors in Dane County. In 2012 alone, we served almost 39,000 meals, delivered by an amazing corps of 250 volunteers. Another program, Independent Health Care, helps seniors and adults with disabilities recover at home with skilled home health services that include nursing care and physical therapy.
For more information about these and other supportive programs, please see our In-Home Services and Home Health Agency sections. And for wonderful options for senior apartments and community living, please see our Housing section.
